Roman remains, traces of ancient walls, the Jewish quarter, the Gothic cathedral, the most significant palaces… There is no end to the wonders of the Gothic Quarter, the oldest part of the city and the historic centre par excellence.
With its alleyways, its squares and the many legends it conceals, the Gothic Quarter is the place to find the essence of the oldest Barcelona.
Located in the district of Ciutat Vella, in the heart of the city, the Gothic Quarter is the oldest nucleus and one of the most beautiful areas of Barcelona. This picturesque neighbourhood is bounded by Las Ramblas, Via Laietana, Passeig de Colom and Plaça de Catalunya.
Born on the remains of Roman Barcino, the coming of the Middle Ages led to the construction of churches and gothic palaces that caused the disappearance of most of the Roman remains. The labyrinthine alleyways and medieval details make the ideal setting to enjoy the city centre at leisure, delighting in the remains of the city’s distant past.
There are numerous reasons to lose yourself in the Gothic Quarter, but we will only mention a few of them:
· Santa Eulalia Cathedral
· Sant Jaume Square
· Carrer del Bisbe
· Plaça Reial
· Portal de l’Angel Street
· Jewish Quarter
Parts of the first wall are still preserved in the Plaça de la Seu, opposite Barcelona Cathedral. In Carrer d’Ataülf there is a Gothic chapel that belonged to the Lesser Royal Palace of Barcelona and is known as the Capella del Palau (Chapel of the Palace).
