Arc de Triomf

Arco de Triunfo

In 1888, Barcelona was the host city of the Universal Exhibition. The Arc de Triomf stood at the entrance to the fair, located in the Parc de la Ciutadella.
A monument of classical form and proportions, but with groundbreaking sculptural and decorative finishes full of symbolism, it became one of the city’s icons.
The arch presided over the Salón de Sant Joan, the venue that led to the Parc de la Ciutadella, where the actual fair took place.
The architect Josep Vilaseca conceived a work of classical character and proportions as an allegory of Barcelona’s respect for the nations and provinces participating in the Exposition. As a counterpoint, Vilaseca chose to clad the monument with exposed brickwork and to give it a totally neo-Mudejar air, a fashionable style in Spain at the time. The combination of the use of brick and the friezes surrounding the arch make it a singularly beautiful piece.
A detailed look at this monument makes us undertand that the Arc de Triomf was conceived as the gateway to modernity in Barcelona at the end of the 19th century.
The lateral reliefs symbolise Agriculture and Industry on one side and Commerce and Art on the other. And above the arch, the coat of arms of each of the other 49 Spanish provinces are presided over by the coat of arms of Barcelona.
To enjoy and admire the Arc de Triomf, go to the top of Passeig Lluís Companys, which is very close to Barcelona Zoo, allowing for a perfect excuse for a stroll through the Parc de la Ciutadella.
