The Sagrada Família is an exceptional church, both in terms of its origin and foundation and in terms of its purpose. The work of the brilliant architect Antoni Gaudí, it was a project promoted by and for the people, and five generations have seen the evolution of the church in Barcelona. Today, more than 135 years after the first stone was laid, the Basilica is still under construction and is due to be finished in 2026.
Gaudí was commissioned to build the Sagrada Família (Catalan for Sacred Family) when he was only 31 years old, and for the last 12 years of his life he lived completely devoted to his great vocation: to serve God through architecture.
On 7 November 2010, Pope Benedict XVI consecrated the church and granted it the title of minor basilica.
