THE AMATLLER HOUSE

The chocolate tycoon Antoni Amatller commissioned Josep Puig i Cadafalch to remodel a three-story building on Passeig de Gracia in 1898. The modernist architect restructured it, building a new façade, redistributing the space and hiring 50 artisans to decorate it inside. The result is simply spectacular – every ceiling, every floor, every window, every lamp and every surprising detail is a true work of art. It offers dramatized visits that are very fun and different from the usual guided tours. It is perhaps the best known on our list for being part of the Manzana de la Discordia, where Casa Batlló and Casa Lleó Morera are also located.

THE HOUSE OF MANUEL ROCAMORA

The Rocamora family made their fortune manufacturing candles and soaps in the mid-19th century. XIX but his heir, Manuel Rocamora, born in 1892, studied Fine Arts and became a great collector. He settled in an Elizabethan mansion in the Putxet neighborhood and surrounded himself with personalities from the cultural world, whom he received in the room, which remains practically the same. Although the house, currently the headquarters of the Rocamora Foundation, lost part of the Garden due to the construction of the Ronda General Mitre, it is still a true museum that houses its impressive collection, which includes paintings, the 5,000 volumes of its library, the furniture of the 18th-19th centuries, among others.

THE PALAU MACAYA

The cotton industrialist Romà Macaya commissioned this house located at Passeig de Sant Joan 108 in Puig i Cadafalch in 1900, a time when the architect was also working on Casa Amatller. He moved from one to the other by bicycle. Hence the cyclist sculpted on one of the capitals of the main door of the palace, a tribute to the sculptor. The carved stonework of the windows and balconies on the white facade, the rich interior decoration and the main staircase stand out.

PHILIP HOUSE

In 1905 the textile industrialist Manel Felip i Sintas hired Telm Fernandez i Janot to build his family residence at number 20 Àusias March street, in Barcelona’s Eixample. A typical example of the modernist ideology, the artistic and craft details of its interior stand out, such as the colorful stained glass windows, the sgraffito and the forge. As a novelty of the time, the lower floors were removed to install shops.

PALAU DEL BARÓ QUADRAS

One of the first buildings built on Diagonal, it was completely remodeled by Puig i Cadafalch between 1902 and 1906 at the request of Manuel Quadras, the first Baron of Quadras, inspired by the Gothic palaces of Barcelona, ​​but with a certain Arab influence. It has two completely different facades, the main one being the Diagonal, in which the tribune and the flamboyant-style balcony stand out. The interior patio is in Andalusian style with a central fountain and the interiors are artistically decorated. It is the headquarters of the Institut Ramón Llull.

THE PALAUET CASADES

The current headquarters of the Barcelona Bar Association, at c/Mallorca 283, is the work of Antoni Serra i Pujals. Pau Casades, who made his fortune in textile printing before moving into the real estate business, had this residence built with classic lines in 1883. With a rectangular floor plan, it is organized around a central courtyard with columns in the style of Pompeii.
