FIRA DE SANTA LLÚCIA 2014
November 28th – December 23rd, 2014
The Fira de Santa Llúcia is a street market that has been held in the Avinguda de la Catedral, right in front of Barcelona’s Cathedral in the Gothic Quarter for 228 years, or so the oldest documents say. Like in many countries of Catholic tradition, the characters said to be present in the birth of Jesus Christ are often depicted in Nativity scenes, be it on public places or private homes. Classic figurines and statuettes of Joseph, Mary, baby Jesus, the Three Magi and many more are often sold with other rather unfortunate characters. All these, as well as all sorts of decorative items, Christmas trees and lighting, make it difficult to believe that it all began as a fairly inconspicuous fair for shepherds and livestock. One way or another, there is no real start to the Christmas season in Barcelona without paying a visit to the Fira de Santa Llúcia.

SANT JORDI – SAINT GEORGE April 23rd, 2015
The 23rd of April is not just the World Book Day, it is also the National Saint’s Day of Catalonia. As far as the legend can tell, a dragon arrived as if on a spell, at the doors of Montblanc the fair, and to confront it no one would dare. Days were filled with gloom, instilled in their hearts was doom, until on a white steed Saint George came, so his mighty spear met its deadly flame. Most uncertain end to the plight, the beast could not withstand the fight, mortally wounded and lifeless it lay, hopelessly bleeding on the ground grey. Yet from that dark crimson ominous death, a rose bush appeared in the same breath. Putting both together, the tradition goes that on this day both roses and books are given and received, as a token of appreciation for the loved ones.
