El gran teatro del liceo
Inaugurated in 1847, the Great Theatre of Liceo is the oldest working and prestigious theatre in Barcelona. Over the years the theater has conserved its role as a cultural center becoming one of the symbols of the city.
Better known as “The Lyceum” (Liceu in Catalan) the theater has seen prestigious works performed by the best singers in the world for over 150 years. Throughout its history the building has suffered numerous setbacks starting from the fire in 1861. In 1893 the theater was attacked by an anarchist that killed 20 people and in 1936 was expropriated and nationalized. In 1994 the theater suffered a terrible fire that destroyed the main hall. Later the hall was rebuilt and upgraded its decor respecting its original style.
