Els Castellers

Els castellers is a Catalan tradition that has been celebrated since the 18th century in many parts of Catalonia. On November 16, 2010, “Castells” were declared by UNESCO to be amongt the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

It is structured in teams called “colles” of people of all ages who build human towers during the
popular festivals.

The tower is formed by three parts:
The people who stand at the floor are called “la pinya”, and they are always the biggest and strongest. The middle of the tower is called “el tronc”; and the three highest parts are “el pom”. For last, the person who stands at the top of the tower, always is a child, and receives the name “enxaneta”. There are so many types of towers, and every one is named differently, depending on their height. For example, “a 3 of 10” is a tower of 10 levels with 3 persons in each.
